News: Watch the home demo for the groovy new song "No/Yes"

This weekend, I was determined to write a song. As often happens when I sit down with my collected lyric notes, several songs start taking shape simultaneously. Today four songs were forming at once, but a single riff, chord progression and melody were stuck in my head.

"No/Yes" is sort of the flip-side of my song "Mulletman." Where that song is a goof on certain kinds of guys, "No/Yes" does the same for a stereo-type of gals.

Using the bass guitar my family gave me a week ago for my birthday and the RC-50 loop-station they got me last year (they spoil me rotten :-), I performed the song in front of my MacBook Pro only moments after I'd finished the lyrics. My exclamations were stifled so as not to disturb my neighbors (there are a couple of sorry-sounding "whoops!), but the moment was definitely captured. I hope you enjoy!

News: New Bootleg Blog: "Unplugged @ Uncorked CD Release" 10.30.10

It's always a big decision as to where to hold a CD Release show--that is, unless you're releasing a CD of a live performance. I didn't have to think too hard about where to celebrate the launch of my "green bootleg" concert recording series, as the first installment was recorded in the gorgeous Uncorked Wine Bar in Akron, Ohio.

One of the special things about Uncorked is the intimacy it invites. There's no need for a mic. No amplifier. No stage. Just a conversation punctuated by songs.

Of course, when you fill that intimate space with a bunch of people who've come to know each other through music, that conversation can be a bit overwhelming at times. And, while the "mood-lighting" didn't do the camera much good, the Unplugged @ Uncorked CD Release show was made special by those that attended.

Thanks to Kaleigh Fitzgerald and Kira Heeley, in this month's Bootleg Blog you can watch videos and browse photos that will make you feel as though you were there too!

News: New Bootleg Blog: "Jo-Jijja-Bey" & The Bullshit Chorus 12.11.10

You might have noticed the absence of a "Holiday Show" at Musica this season. In lieu of "An Evening With The Ullmans" or "Holiday Homecoming Show," I took the stage at Musica to support my pal Kristoffer Carter as he celebrated the release of his album SEASON II--out now on Chicago's Local Road Records.

As KC's "Special Guest" (very classy sounding, no?), I opened the evening doing my furrow-browed folk-rocky thing; which, on this occasion, included an exploration of Michael Jackson's inimitable vocal exclamations and my profanity-laden singalong, "Snakebit."

Of course, when you fill that intimate space with a bunch of people who've come to know each other through music, that conversation can be a bit overwhelming at times. And, while the "mood-lighting" didn't do the camera much good, the Unplugged @ Uncorked CD Release show was made special by those that attended.

News: The All-Ullman Band Returns to Musica March 19th

Two generations of "Ullman Brothers" share the stage at Akron's Musica on Saturday, March 19th starting at 8pm (7:30 doors).

My dad and uncle's band, The Bushmen, will be opening the show with some vintage Rock + Roll, and my brother Brian will be closing with his solo act (The Fascist Puppeteer) performing note-perfect re-creations of contemporary hits and his own brand of Crunk / Ghettotech / Nu-Jazz.

In between, The All-Ullman Band is gonna give my solo songs a kick in the pants and breathe new life into the covers I used to play as a kid.

It's going to be a night of truly one-of-a-kind collaborations you don't want to miss!

I often struggle with wether or not to continue playing frequent, long-form free shows at local cafes and bars here in Cleveland or transition to gigging more selectively only a couple of times a year and perhaps concentrate on touring.

This show, taped at the Arts Collinwood Cafe by Mark Rodriguez, really illustrates why I haven't been able to let go of these types of gigs. I love the low-pressure, relaxed vibe, the opportunity to take chances and develop my live show while interacting with and growing my audience in ways that are just not possible on multi-act bills in loud, crowded clubs.

News: Production Diary: An Old Fashioned Record in the Era of Downloads

"Wanna start… but where to begin?" That's the opening line to one of the songs on this new album. It's also how I feel about trying to blog about it.

Recently, I was watching Bruce Springsteen on VH1 Storeytellers, and he begins by saying "Talking about music is like talking about sex. Can you describe it? Are you supposed to?"

I'm not one to argue with The Boss, but I'm going to try and say a few words about what Jack and I are aiming to do here. Whereas my first album was written and recorded in a vacuum and performed at gigs after the fact, all of the songs on this as-yet-untitled effort have been honed and developed on stage. Accordingly, the primary goal for this new record is to capture the energy and dynamics of my live performances with minimal accompaniment and put them out on vinyl.

That's right folks. In the new era of (disposable) digital downloads, we're making an old fashioned record--what Jack likes to call a "Billy Joel," meaning a nine-song-LP.

News: New Bootleg Blog! An Evening With The Ullmans 3.19.2011

This gig was actually my dad's idea--and a great one at that! After his high school band's first public performance in over forty years at the original "Evening With The Ullmans" a little over a year ago, The Bushmen went on to play several more gigs in 2010. They got their mojo working and were eager to return to the swank digs at Musica.

My personal goal was to facilitate as many collaborations as possible because, while the EWTU lineup (Myself, The Bushmen and--my brother's act--The Fascist Puppeteer) played twice after our Musica debut, we had not since played together again as "The All-Ullman Band." I wanted to emphasize this familial aspect of the show and suggested that we re-team for a Buddy Holly medley and perhaps a song or two of mine...

...It was a tremendous treat to do the Clear Lake Medley ("That'll Be the Day/Oh Boy!/Peggy Sue/Maybe Baby/Not Fad Away") from the Buddy Holly Story with The All-Ullman band. Dad got us all fashion specs, and we had a blast burning through some truly classic Rock + Roll. I was definitely channeling a bit of Gary Busey's performance as well and couldn't help but throw a little Bono at the end for good measure.

After having helped me sing Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" over the end of "Deja Vu," I suppose the audience was ready for anything!

News: New Record Production Vlog #1: The Fort Storey Demos

Starting today, you can watch one-minute video progress reports for my new record (tentatively titled Light the Dark).

Kicking things off in style, is Production Vlog #1: The Fort Storey Demos. This longer-form (well… 4min) digest edition of the "Vlog" (video blog) was shot on February 9th and 15th at producer Jack Storey's home in Cleveland as he and I recorded 10 rough voice-and-gutiar demos on Garageband.

Last night, Jack and I met with engineer Kyle Collins (who recorded my recent Unplugged @ Uncorked live album), and on Saturday we're getting a tour of RCR Recording Studios‎ in Solon.

News: Dreaming Out Loud Records Presents: SEAN KAMMER’S NEW EP IMPOSSIBLE SKIES

Lincoln, Nebraska-based singer-songwriter Sean Kammer released his new single, “Alone,” at midnight last night in support of his new EP, Impossible Skies, set for release on May 31 under pal David Ullman's Dreaming Out Loud Records label. The track, “Alone,” represents the sound and tone of the new record. Produced in Kammer’s home studio, this sound is at once intricately textured and unabashedly bare. It is utterly lacking in radio-worthy hooks, yet its subtle melodies linger long after the last echoes have faded to black. With this release, Kammer builds upon his previous album, Stargazer (2006), both musically and thematically, while retaining his adventurous willingness to challenge the contours of the singer-songwriter genre.

The title of the first single perhaps belies the fact that Kammer did not, in fact, make this record alone. While Kammer supplied the guitars, piano, percussion, and bass guitar, the EP’s genre-bending sound owes much to the contributions of two distinguished musicians with diverse musical backgrounds: Chris Steinke, who performed saxophone on two tracks, and Rebecca Wingo, who provided backing vocals on three tracks. Steinke grew up playing saxophone as a member of various jazz and blues bands in Lincoln, Nebraska, and after stints in Boston, Chicago, and back in his hometown, he now plays in a rock band and freelances as a jazz musician in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has also appeared on releases by Tom Larson and Pablo Masis. While Steinke’s background is firmly rooted in jazz and blues, Wingo’s is in bluegrass and country, two genres she learned to love as a young child following her father’s band to countless bluegrass festivals in and out of her home state of North Carolina. While a college student in Chapel Hill, she co-founded the a cappella group Cadence. She is now an emerging star on the karaoke circuit in Lincoln.

“Alone” is available for streaming and free download at http://seankammer.bandcamp.com, where the EP is also available for pre-order in two formats: (1) as a digital download in the audio format of the buyer’s choosing, and (2) as a Limited Edition CD in a beautifully designed, high-quality pocket sleeve. Scheduled for release on May 31, only 100 of these limited edition CDs were produced. Like the single, it will be available at Kammer’s website as well as other online retailers.

The 'Round Town tradition stretches the definition of "Folk Music" with a variety of performers stationed in clubs, pubs, churches, stores and more throughout the ordinarily sleepy college town.

Free concerts begin during lunch and continue into the wee hours of Saturday morning. Have a bite to eat, do a little shopping and enjoy live music wherever you go. Over 36 downtown businesses will be hosting more than 50 of the area's top acts--many of whom are friends of mine.

His performances invoke thoughts of the great rebellious comedians and social commentators of the past: Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks, and even a bit of Sam Kinison. Hamell is a great mind; acoustic punk rock mixed with a traveler’s soul. There’s no way around his obscenity, but in that is a willingness to fight for the free-thinkers of the world. I badgered the Beachland into letting me open for Ed at the Tavern in March of last year, and I'm so very pleased to have been asked back.

Plus, I love the Cafe at Arts Collinwood! I played there monthly last October through June and can't wait to return--two weeks from today--to set the stage for one of my heros.

The first song written for the record which will likely share its name, "Light the Dark" has been a bear to record. The biggest problem is my overly-dynamic vocal approach. The lyric goes from quiet to loud in hard-to-anticipate jolts. Add to that my insistence on simultaneously singing and playing guitar as well as my refusal to use a "click track," and you've an engineer's nightmare. Thankfully, Elevation engineer Jake Fader is a patient man with a lot of great gear at hand!

Unfortunately, I’ve spent and borrowed all of the money I can to get it to this point, and now I don’t have enough left to finish the album and give it a proper release.

The Cleveland Heights resident is part of a growing number of artists who are asking their followers for money to help support their work. “For me, it’s a little like a pre-order … You’re pre-ordering something and making it possible for that thing to exist,” said Ullman, 32. Two well-known sites that serve as platforms for what’s called “crowdfunding” are Kickstarter and RocketHub, and Ullman uses the latter.
